Course Syllabus

Course Description / Overview:

    In this enrichment class, students will learn:

  • Reviewing Long Division of Integers
  • Manipulating Fractions
  • Understanding Percents
  • Simplifying square roots and cube roots
  • Solving word problems
  • Interpreting Simple Graphs
  • Previewing Pre-algebra topics:  Basic equations, polynomials, etc.
  • Learning simple applications of math to various careers

 

Class Goals/Outcomes:

  • Strengthen basic-math skills such as manipulating fractions, solving word problems, studying simple linear equations, etc.___
  • Learn some simple applications of math
  • Prepare for the next level of math
  • Find out what mathematics is all about

 

Course Outline:

Day 1 Review long division; review fractions -- intermediate to difficult ones; interactive class practice
Day 2 Further drill practice on fractions; percent; simple word problems; online group practice 
Day 3 Introduce radicals; further word problems; classroom interactive practice
Day 4 Miscellaneous review of various week-1 topics; drill exercises
Day 5 Introduce graphs such as  dot plots, pie charts, stem-and-leaf displays, etc.; in-class practice
Day 6 Introduce basic probability concepts such as tree diagrams, a sure thing, an impossible outcome, etc.    Classroom demos and drill problems
Day 7 Introduce very basic topics in algebra:  Polynomials, simple linear equations, etc. ; study of the Pythagorean Theorem; online  interactive practice in class
Day 8 Review of the course; what lies ahead; what is math?

 

Student Expectations / Classroom Policies:

  • Get a lot of sleep the night before as no one can do math when tired
  • Calculator allowed
  • No cell-phone chatting in class please
  • Handouts will be provided in class (no need to buy a book)

  •  A notebook and a lot of scratch paper
  • A pen or pencil
  • A calculator
  • An inquisitive mind ready to learn new topics
