Course Syllabus

Course Description / Overview:

This summers  Reading Comprehension  class will be separated into various sections that will be completed online, using at-home packets, and through discussions during class time on the Canvas platform. Each day starts off  with a warm-up activity focusing on analyzing different elements of the book we are reading in class.  This year the book I have chosen  is the delightful novel The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm. I will add a new Comprehension Strategy each day,  and we will be completing graphic organizers that zone in on elements including Authors Purpose, analyzing character development, extracting themes, using schema to connect, summarizing, comparing/contrasting, and picking out the main ideas in the text. We will read and discuss our book in class using various writing exercises to deepen students understanding. Students will complete Comprehension Worksheets and practice simple techniques to reinforce comprehension. In Week 2 students will be creating a Book Cover Project based on our book, using art supplies that they have at home. They will share these on the last day of class. They will also be writing a summary of the book online which I will provide feedback for. OFKs will supply all 3 packets, the construction paper for their project, and the book, which you will pick up at Ohlone College before classes start. As you can see, we have a packed schedule and I’m looking forward to teaching on this platform with your children this summer! If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at tru_blu@icloud.com. Thank you- Laurie Adams
