Course Syllabus

Course Description / Overview:

As a graduate of U.C. Berkeley in electrical engineering and a master's degree in statistics from Cal State East Bay, Benny Lo will be guiding his students to review various types of test questions from Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry.  Some topics on basic probability and statistics will also be reviewed/studied.

 

Class Goals/Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate key types of SAT-Math Questions
  • Interact with students online to identify weaknesses 
  • Help students brush up on topics forgotten
  • Discuss test strategies related to test-taking
  • Motivate students to go further in math
  • Discuss applications of math to future careers such as medicine, engineering, computing, architecture, etc.

 

Course Outline:

Day 1 Course Introd.; review of linear equations, factoring, word problems; demos of test questions from the book
Day 2 More factoring, word problems, quadratic equations; interactive practice of SAT test questions
Day 3 Review of polynomial manipulations; division of polys; test-question practice
Day 4 Review of geometry; applications of math; SAT test-question drill
Day 5 Review of Week-1 materials; further practice problems from the book
Day 6 Adv. topics in algebra; difficult word problems; practice drill from the SAT book
Day 7 Review of basic trig.; interactive practice problems
Day 8 Review of probability & statistics; practice problems; what lies ahead ...

 

Student Expectations / Classroom Policies:

  • Please get a lot of sleep the night before as nobody can do math when tired
  • Please do not use your cell phone during class
  • Please ask a lot of questions as Benny is very "student-friendly"
  • Please purchase an SAT-Math book from Amazon ahead of the first day of class:
