Course Syllabus
Course Description / Overview:
Intensive training on test-taking strategies and essay writing with a pre-and -post class trial SAT to check progress. Students will be given individual study plans for independent study to strengthen their relevant academic and test-taking skills.
Class Goals/Outcomes:
Week One:
Take practice SAT tests without setting the clock, section-by-section with peer and instructor review. Assess areas that need focus and develop skills for efficient and accurate test performance.
Week Two:
Take timed SAT tests section by section with peer and instructor review. Finish week one with a full, timed-SAT test and set a time to meet with instructor after the test via Zoom to review results and develop an individual study plan.
Course Outline:
Day 1 | Introduction to SAT and practice on Writing and Language Tests, focusing on comprehension and speed |
Day 2 | Introduction to SAT reading Tests, focusing on reading challenges and strategies to improve speed |
Day 3 | Introduction to the SAT essay. Review readings and high, medium and low essays written in response. Develop a critical thinking strategy for an excellent essay. Practice paragraphing and quote integration. |
Day 4 | Write a timed SAT essay, review week one |
Day 5 | Take a timed practice SAT Writing and Language Test, review results and plan strategies for improvement |
Day 6 | Take a times SAT Reading test, review results and plan strategies for improvement |
Day 7 | Take a timed SAT essay, peer review, and plan strategies for improvement |
Day 8 | Take an entire SAT test. Set a time to meet with instructor via ZOOM to develop an individual study plan. |
Student Expectations / Classroom Policies:
Show up ready to work alone and with each other via Zoom break out rooms. We will take short breaks roughly every hour, but do be ready to work with full focus during the entire session.
What Should I bring to Class?
Instructor will provide all materials, but do have a good computer with a camera and a mic and a good writing program like Word or Google Docs.
