Wow. Today’s conversations reinforced for me how grateful I am for our Ohlone community. Lots of information. Lots of listening and questioning. And it felt like they were coming from a place of genuine concern to ensure Ohlone is a safe place - on many levels.

Fostering a Culture of Service

This week’s theme was “Fostering a Culture of Service” – to include our students, our community, and each other. The hope is that you were able to find sessions which met your needs.

Friday’s schedule, in particular, continues to be a work in progress. We tried something new in 2020-2021 and built upon it this week – all-college curriculum and opportunities for breakout discussions to further progress toward a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment at Ohlone.

Your feedback will help to inform future professional development offerings and our efforts for continuous improvement. We absolutely used past LCW feedback in crafting this week’s design. I will keep these evaluations open for the next week or so to allow everyone to find some time to weigh in. Please do so before you immerse yourself in the Fall semester!

Resources Available

The Learning College Week Canvas shell

Robin and the amazing ECampus team created and have maintained a Canvas shell dedicated to Learning College Week. Some materials from sessions have been shared there as have completed and vetted session recordings. Please be patient – as you know, editing the transcript can take time. Ditto with making documents accessible.

Bottom line: there are lots of goodies in the LCW shell. Make sure to go there – and often.

Flex Credit

A few of you have asked about your attendance tracking:

· If all went well, the various session leaders all week have been running reports using the back-end of Zoom based on your “registration” when you logged into the Zoom meetings (name, email address, job classification) to avoid chasing sign-in sheets. They have been sending attendance reports to Christina in HR who has been entering that information into the HR database. You may have been receiving emails from profdev@ohlone.edu confirming you’ve checked in to an LCW event. That’s the hard work behind the scenes to capture your session attendance.

· The HR database. As we unveiled during last Fall’s LCW….you now have the opportunity to log in and see your training records – what you attended and when by academic semester. There’s still some tweaking that needs to happen. Please be kind as we work out any kinks.

The Faculty Professional Development Committee weighed in on the design for this week in the Spring, knowing that there would likely be many a change given all things Covid. Committee members from the Spring included: Sandra Ammons, Jim Andrews, Jim Baxter, Suporn Chenhansa, Chieko Honma, Kerrie Kawasaki-Hull, Liz Pannell, and Sima Sarvari.
There was an extraordinary amount of work which took place over the summer. A special shout-out to the ECampus team (Robin Kurotori, Jackie Vetter, and Mary Wilhelm-Chapin), Brenda Arteaga Reynoso, and Larissa Favela. It’s been an honor working alongside all of them.
Christina Caratachea, Shelby Foster, and Edgar Hernandez are unsung heroes for all of the behind-the-scenes work for LCW’s success.
To Aundrea Love and all of the interpreters: Thank you for all that you do. With your continued guidance, we will all work on making your jobs easier and ensuring an inclusive space.
I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the support from Dr. Bishop and Dr. Cervantes for not only volunteering to facilitate an LCW DEI session but also for offering up the financial resources to bring Dr. Garcia to Ohlone’s DEI efforts during LCW and beyond.

By last count, there were close to 60 different offerings this week (exclusive of all of the Division and department meetings). Professional development wouldn’t happen without all who organized, facilitated, and/or presented during these sessions. Kudos to all!
