Since we are using video for this conversation, I encourage you to consider showing us something you're proud of. Use this activity as a chance to become familiar with your computer, camera, and microphone.

Record using Canvas Studio

Find a place where you are comfortable and relaxed. Record a couple seconds to check your lighting and sound. Introduce yourself, your role at Ohlone College, share what you're learning goal for this course and one thing that fills you with pride. You may choose any recording device and software. Just be sure the video includes a you (not just a screen capture.)

I recommend that you use the Canvas Studio recording tool right here in Canvas. If you're on a computer, you'll see the Canvas Studio icon in the global navigation bar to the left of our course navigation. Studio is between History and Help.

Before captioning, be sure that you've introduced yourself, shared your learning goal for this course, and shared something you're proud of.

Caption Option 1: Studio

Canvas Studio will auto caption your video for you. Once you record and the video renders in Studio, hover on the center of the video. A "View" button will appear. Select this button. Below your video, you'll see tabs: Details, Comments, Insights and Captions. Select Captions. On the left, under "Manage Captions", select "English" from the language options. Click "Request". Come back later to edit and publish your captions.

Caption Option 2: YouTube

If you'd prefer, you may upload your video to your own YouTube channel to auto-generate captions. Be sure to edit the captions for accurate message, spelling, and punctuation.

Any audible parts of your video must be captioned. If you use YouTube, here's a video on how to edit captions. Your video has to be public in YouTube to be viewable in Canvas.

If you sign your video, please provide a transcript for those who do not know ASL.

If you recorded on your phone or other device, you can upload the video directly to Studio or YouTube for captioning prior to embedding in your post.

Post

To post your captioned video, click "Reply" at the bottom of this instruction box. Use the Canvas Studio and YouTube plugins to post your video. You may have to click the 3 vertical dots to open the "More" menu in the rich content editor. You'll find the blue "Canvas Studio" icon to the left of the "Plug -in" icon. YouTube is in the plug-in list as well. Be sure that you've made your YouTube video public so that we all have access.

I want to stress the importance of reading what your peers have to say and interacting with one another to develop and enhance your understanding of the concepts we're learning! We learn from one another. Dive in and get to know these very important people who you'll be learning alongside in our course.
